Mike, Derek, Miro and I, like most teams, had a bye in the first round of the Scottish Cup so last night's match was actually round 2. We played a very pleasant team and for one couple it was their first ever Scottish Cup match - I guess they could have had an easier draw than meeting three internationals and me.
As you'd expect we had a comfortable win and it was the slam zone that won us a lot of points. This was the most extreme example:
| West | North | East | South |
| Paul | | Miro | |
| | | 2♥ | p |
| 4NT | p | 5♣ | p |
| 5♦ | p | 6♥ | p |
| 7NT | p | p | p |
|
I was just wondering how I was going to bid this hand when Miro put his opening bid down, showing a weak hand with 5+ hearts and 5+ in another suit. Keycard solved all the problems and I could count 13 tricks. I didn't ask about the auction in the other room but they stopped in game, so I presume that my hand just rebid a large number of notrumps and got to play there.
When I got home (at half-past midnight), I gave the hand to LotG. Playing the same methods as our opponents we bid:
| West | North | East | South |
| LotG | | Paul | |
| | | p | p |
| 2♣ | p | 2♦ | p |
| 2♥ | p | 3♥ | p |
| 5NT | p | 7♥ | p |
| p | p |
Potentially a very difficult hand to bid but I think you should all find a grand slam with this.
